History lingers around every corner in Charleston. More than 350 years of preserved homes, cobblestone streets, and local legends have helped shape the haunted Charleston that visitors continue to explore today.
Many of those stories are woven into the city’s historic landmarks, making them a fascinating way to experience Charleston’s past. Every historic home, church, and waterfront street has a story to tell, and 20 South Battery and the Battery Carriage House are no exception.
Charleston’s haunted reputation is rooted in more than 350 years of history. Founded in 1670, the city has witnessed colonial settlement, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, devastating fires, hurricanes, and disease outbreaks.
Each chapter left behind stories that still shape the city today. Over time, those stories became part of Charleston’s identity, passed along by residents, historians, tour guides, and curious visitors.
Charleston has preserved much of its past in a way few cities have. Historic homes, churches, cemeteries, and public buildings still stand throughout the city, creating a visible connection between the present and the past.
That connection is undeniably why Charleston is considered one of America’s most haunted cities. Reported apparitions, unexplained encounters, and local legends are often tied to the city’s oldest places. Want to stay close to the stories that make this city unforgettable? Explore our rooms and stay within the heart of haunted Charleston.

Built in 1843, our estate has welcomed generations of guests while becoming an enduring part of Charleston’s history. Today, 20 South Battery is known for its beautifully preserved architecture and the local legends that have made it one of the city’s most storied historic properties.
Our estate is also home to Battery Carriage House, whose haunted history has been recognized in Ghosts of Charleston by Julian T. Buxton III, one of the city’s definitive books on local legends. Its stories have also been featured by National Geographic, Forbes, and other national publications, earning us a place among Charleston’s most recognized historic landmarks.
For travelers searching for haunted hotels in Charleston, our estate offers something truly unique. Here, history isn’t something you simply visit — it’s part of your stay.
Within Battery Carriage House, Rooms 8 and 10 are at the heart of our best-known local legends. Room 8 is associated with sightings of a headless torso believed by some to be a Confederate soldier. Room 10 has long been connected to the story of a gentleman ghost, often described as a friendly, romantic presence.
Guests and staff have shared these stories for generations, and they remain an intriguing part of our estate’s history. Like so many Charleston ghost stories, they’re woven into the property’s past, adding another layer to the experience of staying in a place with nearly two centuries of history.
One of our favorite ways to experience haunted Charleston is by visiting the historic landmarks where the city’s stories continue to live on.
One of Charleston’s oldest public buildings, the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon, is known for its Revolutionary War history and enduring local legends. Some believe the spirits of those once imprisoned and enslaved there still linger within its walls. Guided tours explore both the building’s remarkable history and the stories that have made it one of Charleston’s most talked-about landmarks.
The Dock Street Theatre has welcomed audiences for generations and is closely connected to the legend of Nettie Dickerson. Beyond its ghost stories, it’s one of Charleston’s most beautiful historic theaters and is well worth adding to your itinerary.
Just outside our gates, White Point Garden offers one of Charleston’s most scenic and historic walks. During the Colonial era, the area served as a site for public executions, including pirate hangings, and many believe those events contributed to the garden’s haunted reputation. Today, it’s a favorite stop on Charleston ghost tours and an easy addition to your time exploring the Battery.
One of Charleston’s best-preserved historic homes, Aiken-Rhett House has been left largely unrestored, offering a rare glimpse into life before the Civil War. Its original rooms, preserved outbuildings, and longstanding local legends have made it one of Charleston’s best-known haunted sites.

One of our favorite things to do in Charleston is to join one of the city’s renowned ghost tours. As you walk through the historic district, centuries-old homes, churches, gardens, and landmarks serve as the backdrop for the iconic stories and local legends of Charleston.
